✨ Step Into 600 Years of Jeju’s History After Dark

Some places preserve history behind glass.

Others let you walk straight into it.

From 1 May to 31 October 2026, Jejumok-Gwana Government Office and Gwandeokjeong Pavilion open their gates after sunset, inviting visitors to experience one of Jeju’s most significant historical landmarks beneath the evening lights.

More Than an Old Building

At first glance, Gwandeokjeong may appear to be simply another beautiful traditional Korean pavilion.

In reality, it has stood at the centre of Jeju’s history for nearly six centuries.

Built in 1448 during the Joseon Dynasty, Gwandeokjeong (관덕정, 觀德亭) was originally constructed as a military training pavilion where soldiers practised archery and martial arts.

Its name, meaning “Pavilion for Cultivating Virtue,” reflects the Confucian belief that military skill should be guided by discipline, integrity, and moral character.

Today, it is recognised as the oldest surviving historic building on Jeju Island.

From History to the Screen

Standing beside Gwandeokjeong is Jejumok-Gwana, the former government office complex featured in the hit Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines.

Long before it appeared on screen, however, Jejumok-Gwana was where Jeju’s history was made. During the Joseon Dynasty, government officials managed the island’s administration, received royal envoys, and held official ceremonies from this very complex.

Together with Gwandeokjeong, it formed the political and cultural heart of the island for centuries.

Carefully restored in 2002, Jejumok-Gwana now offers visitors a glimpse into what Jeju’s administrative centre once looked like.

Jeju After Dark

As evening falls, the historic complex takes on a completely different character.

Warm lighting highlights the elegant wooden architecture, creating a peaceful atmosphere unlike the busy streets surrounding the old city centre.

Throughout the evening opening period, visitors can enjoy:

  • Illuminated historic buildings
  • Traditional music performances
  • Busking performances
  • The royal gatekeeper ceremony
  • A leisurely walk through Jeju’s historic downtown

Rather than simply viewing a historic site, visitors are invited to experience it as a living cultural space where history, performance, and everyday life continue to meet.
