What is the Jeju April 3 Incident?
It refers to a series of events starting from March 1, 1947, followed by the uprising on April 3, 1948, and the subsequent armed conflicts and suppression that occurred on Jeju Island until September 21, 1954, during which numerous residents were sacrificed. Triggered by anger over police firing at civilians in 1948, the event led to an armed uprising by the South Korean Labor Party and a brutal crackdown by the government, resulting in large-scale civilian massacres. Over a period of more than seven years, between 60,000 and 80,000 people were tragically killed, and more than 3,000 remain missing. It is a heartbreaking and tragic event in modern Korean history that must be remembered.
Commemoration and Events
Every year on April 3, Jeju City holds a memorial service at the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park. The city also organizes the April 3 Peace March and historical tours of related sites, including:
- Jeju 4.3 Peace Park
- Gwandeokjeong
- Goneul-dong
- Sangumburi
In addition to these historical sites, various cultural and natural experiences are planned, such as the Jeju International Marathon scheduled for June.
