Foreign tourists visiting Jeju will find it more convenient to use mobile payment services.
Jeju Tourism Organization, Korea Easy Payment Promotion Agency, and Alipay Plus signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on April 25th at the Jeju Welcome Center to enhance the convenience of consumption for foreign tourists.
This agreement reflects the consumption trends of foreign tourists, especially from China, where the use of mobile payments is increasing. The purpose is to promote consumption by overseas tourists visiting Jeju by making mobile payments easier, thereby revitalizing the local economy.
According to a report from the Small and Medium Business Administration, as of June last year, approximately 943 million Chinese people were using mobile payments, and it was observed that consumption centered on mobile payments by Chinese tourists was increasing.
Through this agreement, payment with Alipay Plus Wallet is now possible at all Zero Pay affiliated stores nationwide. Users from countries such as China, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Mongolia, who are affiliated with Alipay Plus, can enjoy travel and shopping in Jeju using their country’s payment service without cash.
The three organizations agreed to cooperate in various areas such as recruiting and operating mobile payment merchant stores, promoting and supporting inbound tourism, and promoting online and offline activities to activate mobile payments.
Prior to this agreement, from April onwards, Jeju Tourism Organization and various organizations have been conducting promotion events to stimulate consumption in Jeju’s traditional markets (four zones of Dongmun Market and Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market) targeting foreigners in connection with Alipay Plus mobile payment services for two months, and plan to expand the target areas in the future.
An official from Jeju Tourism Organization stated, “Through this agreement, we hope to increase the actual consumption of foreign tourists through the spread of mobile payments, thereby contributing to the revitalization of the local economy,” and “We will actively pursue close cooperation marketing projects to spread the brand of Jeju as a global tourist destination for foreign tourists.”
