On the 3rd of April, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced that they would be undertaking large-scale collaborative productions alongside 5 provincial arts groups. Namely the Provincial Dance Troupe, Jeju Symphony Orchestra, Jeju Choir, Seogwipo Wind Orchestra, and Seogwipo Choir. They plan to brand these productions as unique to the identity of Jeju and promote their provincial arts performances.
The performances will be based on various Jeju-themed narratives, including literary works set on the island, historical accounts from the Tamna and Goryeo periods, Jeju’s natural ecology in connection with the 2025 National Heritage Visit Year, local myths and legends, and the exile of King Gwanghaegun in Jeju.
Marking the beginning of this development will be a scriptwriting contest that will run from the 14th of April to the 30th of May. Additionally, composers and directors will also be selected for the main performance at the Jeju Culture and Arts Center on the 8th of November this year.
Jeju Island hopes to debut the ticketed main performance in time for the 2026 National Sports Festival season. Aligning with their long-term strategy to integrate these performances into the tourism and culture industry, their hope is to expand from local productions to tours and permanent performances from 2027 onwards.
